img-20120928-00003Great Chunking Action on Nice Yellowfin

The last couple nights produced our best trips of the Fall to date.  We hooked 16 and 20 fish on our last two trips and the guys boated 8 and 13, obviously fighting a good many more.  These are not the 45-55 pound fish we've been catching most of the season, but a larger school, some of which are in the low 70 pound range.  They are tough fighting fish for sure.  All the action has come on the drift on sardines.  Most of the bites have been up top with the tuna feeding in the upper 50 feet of the water column.  Hopefully this is a sign of the beginning of a great October Yellowfin run.  We also saw our first Longfin tuna of the season, caught a nice Wahoo on the troll, and jumped off a decent sized Mako on a 60 pound fluro carbon leader.

Finally, the fish have started turning on at night.  After a slow night Thursday, we made a move to the north and offshore and it paid off.  Once we found the fish, we had pretty steady action for most of the evening.  No huge numbers, but we only had 2 gentleman on board with us to fight the fish.  The fights were pretty long and the yellowfin relatively large.  We were short drifting a temperature break in about 500 fathoms that was holding the fish.  We ended up with 3 nice sized yellowfin in the boat, and lost probably 4 others.  Our last bite of the evening ended up a 100-110# big eye, which we put in the boat.  We packed it in about 4:30am and headed home.   A bit further up the line to the north, the chunk bite is absolutely nuts, so seems we are in for a good few weeks of fishing.

Capt. Joe ran a day trip on Friday and found some great action with up to 50 dolphin and eight billfish sightings (white marlin and sailfish).  Great action, not all that far from the dock.  Reports of wahoo on the inshore lumps are also pretty steady as well, so not a bad time to try a shorter day trip either.

Trey

postheadericon Tuna Chunk Bite on Fire Again

yellowfin tuna jigged YELLLOWFIN TUNA BITE WIDE OPEN AGAIN

After running a series of 'day trips' we went back to our standard overnight schedule leaving at 1pm yesterday. We checked out a few lumps here and there and finally started marking some fish and bait on the bottom. After a short drift, we anchored up and it only took 15 minutes to get the first bite. All by ourselves for the most part, from 4pm till almost dark, we were off to a good start with 13 in the box when the sun went down. The night was slower, but that's ok...everyone rested up. We had 3 bites overnight, caught 1, then it busted wide open again at about 5am and we caught the remainder of our fish real quick. Probably had 35? or so hookups on the trip. pretty much non-stop action. The majority of the fish were taken on spinning outfits with 30-40 pound leader, with the exception of the fish we jigged which were on conventional setups and a bit heavier leader. Probably the best jigging bite of the year for us yesterday afternoon.

We are in tomorrow, then back at it wed/thur. Still have 1 spot open for our wed/thur trip.

Yellowfin Bite - Great Chunking, Jigging and Live-Bait Action

The Yellowfin Bite goes on...been at it pretty hard the last week or so. If you want to target yellowfin on light tackle, nows the time to go! There is a consistent bite going on, almost entirely on the chunk/jig. We've been adding in some live-baits and kites when it's a bit slow to get a few more bites. Not sure how long this will last, but it's a heck of a lot of fun to catch 50 pound yellowfin on light tackle. We've caught between 2 and 17 per trip over the last week, with a minimum number of bites/hookups at about 10 to 30 per trip. We are getting the bites, boating the fish is not easy, given the light tackle required to get the bites...Looking for some new water to move into the canyons to stir things up a bit and bring us a new batch of fish, but we'll keep pounding out these yellowfin until they move on.

Tight Lines,

Capt. Trey
